India Certification Services

In order to sell certain products in India, manufacturers and importers must demonstrate the product meets Indian public safety, automotive, wireless, and telecommunications standards.

Obtaining all applicable certifications to sell products in India can be a complex process. Manufacturers must identify the applicable certifications required, familiarize themselves with the different processes, identify reputable testing laboratories, provide product samples for testing in country, in some cases secure an in-country representative, apply for official certification from regulatory bodies, and possibly support factory inspections.

BIS Certification is the largest certification scheme in India, and it is mandatory for many consumer electronics, and IT products. For automotive, telecom, and wireless products, they may also require AIS, TEC, or WPC certifications

What Type of Indian Certification Do I Need?

Determining whether a product falls under mandatory requirements of an Indian certification scheme can be more complicated than one may think.  There can be a significant amount of grey area in the regulations governing types of equipment included in any of the schemes.  For instance, the BIS CRS scheme mandates that the category Automatic Data Processing Equipment fall under the requirements.  Automatic data processing equipment covers a very large range of products, many of which have been determined by BIS to be exempt from the scope.  Factors in making this determination can range from the primary intent of the end use product, to the method of shipment, to simply requiring a ruling from the certification body.  For exempt products that are in grey areas, proper documentation should be maintained in order to prove the exemption. This can help avoid lengthy (and costly) delays in Indian customs.

A product may require more than 1 type of certification depending on its application.  Given the potential complexity in ascertaining certification requirements, it can be beneficial to work with a compliance expert who understands the different certification schemes, and can assist in determining all applicable certifications before selling products into India.
