Most European certification requirements are mandated by law.  The good news is that many of them allow for self-declaration, which gives the manufacturer additional flexibility they may not have under a certification body scheme.  The drawback is that the Europeans have more product certification requirements than most any other region in the world.

Complying with all applicable certification disciplines required to sell products in Europe can be a complex process. Manufacturers must identify all applicable disciplines, compose test plans that meet the mark but don’t break the bank, identify capable testing laboratories, provide product samples for testing, and be prepared to submit detailed compliance packages for applicable products.

What Type of European Certification Do I Need?  

Unlike many other countries/regions, the CE mark is the only certification mark required for the EU and associate EU countries.  This was done to simplify trade within the EU, such that a national mark would not be required to market in each country.  National marks such as TUV, VDE, BSI, Nemko, etc. are voluntary marks but may be required for specific customer purposes.  Since the UK has exited the EU, the UKCA mark is required for entry into Britain.  The UKCA mark requirements are structured much the same as those of the CE mark.
